Baghdad – Speaking at a symposium hosted by Al-Nabaa Forum for Dialogue, Member of Parliament Rezan Sheikh Deler emphasized the need to establish an independent committee of experts outside the three branches of government to select members of the Electoral Commission, ensuring the integrity and independence of the electoral process.
During her presentation at the session titled "Professionalism in the Electoral Commission and the Future of the Democratic Process," which gathered media professors, electoral experts, civil society representatives, and journalists, Sheikh Deler criticized current selection mechanisms. She explained that choosing commission board members through a so-called "committee of experts" composed of political bloc leaders and partisan MPs yields an electoral body bound by party loyalties, ultimately facilitating victories for those same ruling blocs.
Sheikh Deler called for forming an expert committee of genuine independents committed to the democratic trajectory to safeguard election integrity and ensure credible outcomes. She added that this approach is vital to dispel deep-seated public perceptions of electoral fraud and prevent the recycling of the same political figures who have eroded public trust in the political process.
